Liverpool Crisis: Is Mohamed Salah or Arne Slot Leading the Team Toward Decline?
Liverpool FC may be having one of its poorest seasons since it clinched the English Premier League title last season. The OFL hasn't been good at all recently - on these past few games the team has entered into a dynamic of unsteadiness and idientity lost, regardless of opponents. And that has brought only one pertinent query: who does the blame rest more with - Mohamed Salah or Arne Slot?
A rocky beginning... and an early defeat.
Liverpool kicked off their season with a loss against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on penalties (3-2) after an entertaining 2-2 draw, a game that already showed that there is a lack of focus in the team and also quite vulnerable.
Although the Dutch coach, Arne Slot made an effort to revive the team after winning their 20th title and producing some impressive results, the Reds again on track with inconsistency. It steadied itself in the match against Manchester United, but it stepped through its first five games—hammered by Brentford, Crystal Palace and (…)
They didn’t have any sense of unity from the goalie up to the forwards, there was no tactical discipline, none of what you call team spirit.
Salah’s caught between setbacks and backlash.
Egyptian prodigy Mohamed Salah began the season with some problems compared to his last season, a brilliant year where he offered unmatched stats with 57 contributions (34 goals and 23 assists), arriving as a strong Ballon d’Or candidate.
“For this season, he played 18 games and got 5 goals and 3 assists, which is a performance that might have led to the Reds decline in the league as well as in UCL,” some even said.
Some go as far as het feeling Salah sharing the blame of not shining to his standards, while others think it had everything to do with not playing in a tactical formation that would cater for his role on the pitch.
Salute… Under the Microscope
On the contrary, a majority of Liverpool supporters blame coach Klopp for the technical failure. Galtier's work has him to say only observed glimpses of his players and the tactical influence Englishman that have been felt is not as yet, at least from our purview here.
Slot played 20 matches, won 10 and lost 10, which gives them just 30 points in the process, half the total number available, an indication of their inconsistency and lack of stability.
Ice cold deals at $500m… and counting
Liverpool spent almost 500 million euros on eight new recruits this summer, but they've yet to pay dividends.
Isaac — Club’s record signing (€145 million): Appeared in 10 games with one goal and one assist.
Wirtz (€125 million): Featured in 16 games and contributed just 3 assists.
Hugo Ekitike: 18 appearances, 6 goals, and with 1 assist.
Kirkiz (LB) - Appeared in 18 games and scored once, but was a clear defensive liability.
Jeremy Frimpong: Jeremy had an injury hit season, played in 9 games and scored one goal with no assists.
It was a level of outlay that went down as the highest in history, but the new signings didn't align with club's ambition or indeed any team requirements.
The data confirms the technical failure at Melwood, what if we look only at the first 20 games of this season:
He scored 34 goals.
He conceded 37 goals.
The previous season, after 20 matches:
He scored 36 goals.
And he allowed just 10 goals.
The massive void in defense is testament to the fact that this isn’t just a crisis on offense but at the heart of their entire outfit.
The crisis at Anfield is not down to one player or manager, but the product of collective incompetence: planning, recruitment and technical performance.
